Pawtucket is the 4th largest city in Rhode Island, and both its history and future are tied to industry and textile mills. The town produces lace, textiles, jewelry, and silverware, and it also houses one of the biggest toy companies in the world. The arts are big in Pawtucket, and the southernmost neighborhood, Oak Hill, is quite popular with new residents.

The Oak Hill Neighborhood
Oak Hill is on the Providence border, and it runs into both the Blackstone and Hope neighborhoods of Providence. While it’s mostly residential, it does include some shopping and restaurants on East Ave. (Hope St. becomes East Ave. once you cross into Pawtucket from Providence). In fact, two of the area’s most popular vegetarian/vegan restaurants are just inside the neighborhood (Garden Grille and Wildflour), and in the same shopping plaza, you have Indian food at Rasoi, pizza at Antonio’s, a drugstore, a cycling fitness center, a medical clinic, and a pet store. And, just over the border in Providence, you have homemade ice cream at Three Sisters, Japanese food, and more Indian. There’s a lot packed into this tiny area. Oh, and if you like historical diners, just to the north is Modern Diner, which was the first diner in the U.S. to be put on the National Register for Historic Places and is one of only two Sterling Streamliner diners still in operation.
Parks and Recreation
There are several parks within easy walking and driving distance from Oak Hill. In Providence, you could walk to the historic Swan Point Cemetery, Lippitt Memorial Park, and Blackstone Boulevard, and if you don’t mind hopping in the car, Slater Memorial Park is only 10 minutes away. Slater Park is Pawtucket’s largest park at 197 acres, and it includes part of the 10 Mile River Greenway (a paved bike path along the 10 Mile River), the oldest house in Pawtucket (the Daggett House), an original Looff Carousel, a very popular dog park, picnic areas, a pond with boat rentals, a petting zoo for the kids called Daggett Farm, tennis courts, and ball fields. And, if you’re more into the fine arts, it’s also home to the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, which has exhibits throughout the year, classes, and workshops.
Although technically not in Oak Hill, the Pawtucket Red Sox stadium is only a 10 minute drive away, too. The Pawsox (as they’re known to locals) are the minor league team for the Boston Red Sox, and there are events at the stadium throughout the year.
Commute
Pawtucket and Oak Hill are very close to Providence, so if you work in the city, it’s an easy drive to the office. And, if you don’t want to worry about parking once you get there, you can take advantage of the RIPTA bus system, which can quickly get you to downtown Providence, the MBTA station in South Attleboro, MA, or the airport.
